Kansas City, Missouri, February 20, 2025 – Andrew Lester accused of shooting a Black teenager Ralph Yarl who mistakenly rang his doorbell has died just days before his sentencing, leaving the victim’s family and the community grappling with unresolved justice.

The man, 86, had pleaded guilty to second-degree assault on February 14, 2025, for the April 2023 incident in which he shot the teen through a glass door. His death today closes a nearly two-year legal battle, but for many, it feels like accountability slipped away.

The shooting occurred on April 13, 2023, when the teenager, then 16, approached the wrong house in Kansas City’s Northland neighborhood to pick up his younger siblings.

Instead of finding the correct address, he rang the doorbell of the accused, who fired two shots—one to the head and one to the arm—leaving the teen with a traumatic brain injury.

Despite the severity of his injuries, the young man survived, though his recovery has been arduous.

Initially, the accused faced severe charges, including first-degree assault and armed criminal action, which could have resulted in a life sentence.

However, after multiple delays—largely due to his declining health—he struck a plea deal, admitting guilt to a reduced charge of second-degree assault.

Prosecutors had planned to seek a five-year prison term, but with his death today, that possibility vanishes.

The victim’s mother expressed deep frustration, stating that the family feels robbed of both time and justice. “Two years of our life have been stolen,” she said, adding that the man’s death means he “escaped sentencing.”

The case drew widespread attention from the start. Protests erupted in Kansas City, with demonstrators calling for stronger accountability, while a crowdfunding campaign raised millions to support the teen’s recovery.

Authorities acknowledged a racial element to the Ralph Yarl shooting, though no hate crime charges were filed—a decision that continues to spark debate.

Teen’s Recovery and Community Impact

Despite the trauma, the teenager’s resilience has been remarkable. After undergoing emergency surgery, he graduated high school and began college in Texas.

His mother noted that while his spirits remain high, the brain injury has left lasting challenges, particularly in the mornings.

The incident also fueled broader discussions about gun violence and racial tensions, with many drawing parallels to similar cases across the country.

Andrew Lester dies awaiting sentencing, and his passing has elicited mixed reactions.

Some view his guilty plea as a step toward taking responsibility, while others, including the family’s civil rights attorney, see it as a missed opportunity for full accountability.

“It’s a travesty that he avoided the consequences,” the attorney said, vowing to keep the teen’s story in the public eye.

For now, the teen continues to rebuild his life, but the lack of a final sentence leaves a lingering sense of incompleteness. As one family member put it, “Justice was never truly served.”
