An Azerbaijan Airlines flight traveling from Baku to Grozny crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on December 25, 2024. The Embraer 190 aircraft was carrying 67 people, including 62 passengers and 5 crew members, when it encountered severe weather conditions and was forced to make an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers from Aktau Airport.
Initial reports indicate that 25 individuals survived the crash, with 14 of them hospitalized. Among those injured, five are in intensive care, including an 11-year-old boy and a 16-year-old teenager. The Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies has mobilized over 150 personnel and 45 units of equipment to the crash site to assist in rescue operations and extinguish the fire that erupted upon impact.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the aircraft nosedived and exploded into flames upon hitting the ground. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment of the crash, showing the plane losing altitude rapidly before crashing into an open field.
Kazakhstan’s authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, examining potential causes such as technical malfunctions and the impact of dense fog that led to the flight being rerouted. The situation remains fluid as updates continue to emerge regarding passenger lists and further details about the survivors.
As emergency responders work tirelessly at the site, our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.
