Chris Brown files a $500M lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging defamation in the docuseries Chris Brown: A History of Violence.
R&B artist Chris Brown has filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment over allegations made in the docuseries Chris Brown: A History of Violence.
The documentary, which aired on October 27, 2024, on Investigation Discovery, accuses Brown of being a “serial rapist and sexual abuser.”
Brown’s legal team claims the series is defamatory, filled with falsehoods, and has caused irreparable damage to his reputation and career.
The Chris Brown $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on January 21, 2025, alleges that the producers knowingly aired false information for profit.
According to the lawsuit, the documentary revisits discredited allegations, including a 2020 accusation by an anonymous woman referred to as “Jane Doe.”
She claimed that Brown drugged and raped her at a yacht party hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs.
However, her case was dismissed in August 2022 due to lack of prosecution.
“This case is about protecting the truth,”
said Brown’s attorney Levi McCathern.
“Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information.”
The Chris Brown lawsuit also accuses Warner Bros. and Ample Entertainment of prioritizing profits over journalistic integrity by sensationalizing unverified claims to attract viewers.
The lawsuit further highlights that Jane Doe’s allegations have been “discredited over and over” and alleges that she was “a perpetrator of intimate partner violence and an aggressor herself.” Despite these facts, the documentary portrays Brown as a habitual offender without any convictions for sex-related crimes.
Brown’s legal team acknowledges his past mistakes, including his 2009 assault on Rihanna, which he publicly addressed in his 2017 documentary Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life.
They argue that since then, he has grown from those experiences, but the docuseries undermines his efforts by perpetuating a false narrative.
The Chris Brown $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery seeks damages for defamation and emotional distress.
It also states that a portion of any awarded damages will be donated to survivors of sexual abuse.
“Their actions not only harm Mr. Brown but also undermine the credibility of genuine survivors,”
McCathern added.
Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment have yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit.
The case raises important questions about media accountability and the ethical responsibilities of content creators when dealing with sensitive allegations involving public figures.
