Jimmy Carter Funeral Procession Begins in Georgia

Saturday marked the beginning of the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in Georgia. In Plains, his childhood home, a church bell rang 39 times to honor his role as the 39th U.S. president. A motorcade carried Carter’s casket, draped with an American flag, and made stops at key locations from his life.

Legacy and Tributes

Carter dedicated himself to The Carter Center after his presidency, focusing on peace, democracy, and human rights. He held office from 1977 to 1981 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His presidency, however, faced economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis.

“President Carter’s legacy showcases service and integrity,” Jason Carter, his grandson, declared at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also praised Carter’s humility and his contributions to both Georgia and the global community.

“Jimmy Carter was a beacon of hope and commitment to peace,” an official from The Carter Center confirmed. Senator Bernie Sanders added, “Carter will be remembered as a decent, honest, and down-to-earth man.”

The funeral has touched many, drawing crowds to pay their respects. Carter’s life continues to inspire public service and compassion for people in Georgia and beyond.

There is talk about how Carter’s approach might shape future leaders, emphasizing humility and service. These thoughts stem from his lifelong work, not solely from his funeral events.

You can visit Carter’s casket at the Carter Center until January 7, 2025. On January 9, 2025, his funeral will occur in Washington, D.C., after which he will be buried in Plains next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
