OpenAI Service Disruption
OpenAI encountered a major service disruption on December 26, 2024. Users globally couldn’t access ChatGPT and Sora, OpenAI’s AI chatbot and text-to-video generator, respectively. The outage started at about 1:30 PM ET, and over 12,000 users reported issues in the last 24 hours, according to Downdetector.
OpenAI quickly acknowledged the problem on their status page. They confirmed high error rates for both services, including the API. The company began fixing Sora around 6:15 PM ET, and by 11 PM ET, ChatGPT services were fully restored.
This marks the second significant outage for ChatGPT this month. These incidents expose the challenges of scaling AI services. OpenAI has promised a thorough investigation to prevent such issues in the future. Moreover, since their API was down, many developers and businesses faced disruptions.
Interestingly, this outage happened right after OpenAI announced the public release of Sora and new features with Apple’s iOS 18.2. This has led to discussions about AI service reliability, especially when integrated into critical applications.
The user community responded with a mix of frustration and light-heartedness. Memes circulated, but there was also relief when services returned. OpenAI used social media and their status page to keep users updated.
We are almost fully back online now, we appreciate your patience! https://t.co/PTpaOMmnaB
